Avis uses the latest water-recycling technology to save water.
In 2014, Avis saved more than 116 million litres of water by harvesting water in their wash bays at Avis Head Office, Cape Town International, King Shaka International and Port Elizabeth Airports, which sees an increase in 12 million litres of water saved year on year.
Between 2007 and 2014, Avis saved a staggering 557 million litres of water and in 2013; Avis installed a water-recycling wash bay at Port Elizabeth Airport to increase its water savings.
After examining its water usage at the car-washing facilities in 2007, Avis installed the latest water-recycling technology which reduced the amount of water used from 200 to about 160 litres per wash. While fresh clean water has to be used in the ‘final rinse arch,’ recycled water is used during the ‘pre-soak’ and ‘shampoo’ stages.
To further reduce the amount of clean water required for the final rinse arch, a sensor is used to detect the presence of a vehicle entering and leaving the rinse arch, resulting in an additional reduction of about 20 litres of fresh water per car wash.
Today, the Avis car wash process machines recycle up to 88% of the water used which is cleaned to 90% clarity and has reduced the need for municipal water significantly.
Rainer Gottschick Avis Budget Chief Executive, Southern Africa says, “At Avis one of our key focus areas is the conservation of South Africa’s most precious resources and our aim is to continue to conduct intensive water recycling efforts to effectively become water neutral.”
“We urge businesses across South Africa to follow suite and save water where possible. Rainwater harvesting is just one part of a holistic solution to saving one of South Africa’s most essential commodities,” concludes Gottschick.
