Avis helps put the planet on the road to good health

In minimising its impact on the environment, and promoting a sustainable future, Avis has committed itself to saving water by harvesting water in their wash bays at the Avis Head Office and Avis offices at Cape Town International, King Shaka International and Port Elizabeth Airports. In 2014 alone, Avis saved more than 116 million litres of water.
Having implemented this project in 2007, Avis has collectively saved a staggering 557 million litres of water.

“One of our key focus areas at Avis is the conservation of South Africa’s most precious resources and our aim is to continue to conduct intensive water recycling efforts to save the planet” says Rainer Gottschick, Avis Chief Executive southern Africa.

Beyond this, Avis has, in partnership with Nedbank Capital, announced its support for the Joburg Landfill Gas to Energy Project – a project that serves to utilise methane gas generated from waste in Johannesburg landfills including Linbro Park, Marie Louise, Robinson Deep, Goudkoppies and Ennerdale municipal landfill sites.
Phase one of the project will be to harvest the methane gas and phase two will be converting this gas into energy and storing it in a generator so it can be implemented into the national energy grid. Avis has bought itself Voluntary Carbon Units (VCUs) in this project, going well beyond compliance, with the aim of helping relieve the pressures of today’s energy constraints.

To boost energy savings, Avis has installed heat pumps at its regional office, saving 71% on energy, cost and CO2 emissions relative to the old technology consumption. In addition, Avis has also retrofitted light fittings and bulbs in various facilities to ensure electricity consumption is as efficient as possible across the board.
“Avis has continuously been environmentally conscious and we are pleased to support this most valuable project. We will always continue our support for initiatives that will not only reduce our carbon footprint, but that of the country’s as well”.

“Although we’re in the car rental business, our planet is certainly something we’re not renting. It’s ours to keep, so we all have to do our part to ensure a sustainable future,” concludes Gottschick.
